A Bit of Weekend Baking and Croqueting, dahling

October 9th

I learned how to play croquet this weekend and if you had any doubts, Melati and Matt know how to throw one heck of a party. Tequila Stakes Croquet is one of the best parties I’ve been to in a long time, and I wasn’t even able to stay terribly long. I wish I’d been able to play and eat all evening. Oh, the food. And the margarita machine. And the company! Fun all the way around. Hopefully I’ll be invited back.

I brought: Pumpkin polenta bread

One of the best things I’ve ever baked, if I do say so myself. Love this recipe. (So much so that I burned the roof of my mouth eating them too soon out of the oven. Oy.)

and mini Shaker lemon pies. I hate pie crust. I hate making it. I hate rolling it out. I hate eating it. From now on, no more pies. I simply am not good with the pastry.

I brought brownies too, because Ms. Melati is celebrating the big 3-0 on November 6th and she said they were her favorite. I’m not too sure she even got one.

  1. Those look gorgeous! I have a difficult time making pastry too, but I’ve found that a food processor and two sheets of clingwrap (to roll it out between), are my best friends :0

  2. Pumpkin polenta?? That is one I haven’t heard of before. They look, and sound, really yummy!

    I’m so good at making pies… LOL! Actually, I have to make the pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving and have had to ever since I was old enough to bake. I cheat though and get the roll out pastry from Pilsbury. 😉

  3. Pumpkin polenta!!! That’s what that was!! Everyone was asking what is was and gobbling it up. Big hit.

    And yes, I got a brownie. In fact, I got the FIRST brownie.

  4. Brownies are my standby. But I cheat and use a mix and then add in any or all of: chocolate chips, peanutbutter chips, mini m&ms. It always goes over well and it is so easy – stir the ingredients together and throw it in the oven for 28 minutes.

    So when ya gonna post that polenta recipe? And I still haven’t seen a picture of Ruby!

  6. Okay we need to get together. I will show you how to make the most perfect pie crust. My mom taught me a few years ago and it it super easy! Everything looked soooooo good. Recipe for the polenta pumpkin bread please!!!

  7. Eating three pumpkin polenta breads made me one happy boy. I’d say they made me almost giddy in fact, which is a compliment of the highest order, because I don’t get full-on giddy. Man, could eat those things all day. I don’t know how you could’ve given ’em away to other people. They were that good. So a big hearty cheers to you.

  13. Did you just say you hate pie crust? Me lady, when I’m in town next I would be so absolutely thrilled to share my standby recipe with you. It’s wildly easy to make and you will want to eat it, I promise. Or, in the case that you still hate it, fill it with anything and I’ll eat it myself. We have an ALL PIE ALL THE TIME mantra around these parts.

    I’m making the Pumpkin Polenta now as we speak. Hopefully I can do it justice and make it look as good as you did. Now, I’ve got to get me a mini muffin pan as well.
