Afghans, and I’m Not Talking Crochet

January 12th

Live in Phoenix? Like great ethnic food? May I recommend one of my new favorite finds: The Kabab Palace. It is the only Afghan restaurant in Phoenix and the food is excellent. I expected to walk into a fast food pita place and instead sat down to linens and ate a $10 lunch buffet on China. It was surprisingly luxurious and the staff was very attentive. I normally don’t eat a huge lunch or rave about buffets, but this place is worthy of all the praise I can give it. There was grilled chicken, lamb and beef, many types of stewed and curried vegetables. There was sweet rice or seasoned long-grain rice. We had baby pumpkin served in a yogurt sauce for dessert. Fabulous. I can’t wait to come up for another reason to go!
Afterward, I saw Kite Runner, to complete the Afghani-themed day. Excellent movie and they honored the author’s voice well. Four out of five stars, absoloodle.

  1. That eatery sounds delish. We have a fantastic Indian restaurant here, but it is way overpriced so we don’t go often. They have great curry. I have ‘The Kite Runner’ on my list to be read. I am glad the movie was good.

  2. Mmmm, I’ll have to try that place. Did you happen to notice if they have any vegetarian/vegan dishes? I recently made the jump from veg to full on vegan. 🙂

  3. We have a great Afghani place in our ‘hood too — absolutely delish!

  4. It was great to “meet” you this morning. In living color and everything. I also realized that you weren’t on the blogroll. That changed quickly.

    Have a fantastic weekend!

  5. Great to know about this place. Considering all the American scenes of the Kite Runner take place in my hometown, you could probably imagine that I’ve been missing good Afghan food ever since I moved to AZ.

  6. Sounds yummy.

I read in our paper that the cildren who star in the movie have had to be moved from Afghanistan for their own safety. “The children and their adult guardians had been flown out of Afghanistan by Paramount Pictures days before, to a secret location in the United Arab Emirates. There were serious concerns that their lives might be in danger if they stayed, because they had acted in the film.”

How sad is that? I hope they will be okay.

  7. oh if you like the kite runner have you read this blog?

she is the directors wife, fulltime artist, mother of an autistic son, she is amazing.

  8. I’m worried to see the movie. I’m afraid that it can’t possibly do the book justice. I just don’t want to be disappointed. But, thanks for the recommendation, 4 of 5 is pretty darn good!

    Have a super day!

  9. I’m so lucky that I can walk to Kabab Palace and Sushi Eye from the office. We’ll have to meet up one night.

  10. Sounds like a great place. Next time I’m in Phoenix I’m stopping by there.
