Ask and Ye Shall Receive

June 4th

Remember when I talked about taking a broken sewing needle in the throat and wishing for a new machine? My mom wasn’t just reading, she’d already bought one and had it stashed away. That incredible woman sent it back to Phoenix this weekend with some family friends who were visiting. I picked it up and thought perhaps she’d also packed my collection of Nancy Drew novels, it was so heavy.

The giant box

No, just the new Swedish beast. I managed to get her out of the box and plugged in. It seriously took three adults to finally find the compartment that contained the feet, which in all fairness we were calling the “foots” after a bit too much wine. Long story short, the new machine has arrived. The Singer is looking on with some serious performance anxiety and frankly I don’t know where to go from here.

Two machines, one chair

The Singer looks on with jealousy

The new beast

Wow. No idea what those do

Of course the new machine came with an instructional VHS tape, which might as well be an 8-track. I will read the manual and goof around with this until the next visit from my folks.

All said and done, I’m pretty darn lucky. I wonder if I start really wishing for that pony…

  1. Wooooooooooo! New machine! And just look at all those fancy what-the-f-am-I-ever-going-to-use-these-for stitch settings!

Congrats on your new machine, VHS instruction tape and all πŸ˜‰ Too funny.

And as my grandma would say, “Use it in good health.”

  2. It’s like porn, but way better.

  3. I’m pretty sure that is the same machine I use. I love, love, love, love, love it. Especially the beep when you forget to put down the presser foot or are about to run out of bobbin thread!! Awesomeness!!

  4. Yay for Momma – she did so good (I personally think Mommas are the best sewing machine buyers ever – hehehe).

Maybe there is a sewing machine shop around you that sells the same brand and can do a fairly inexpensive lesson. That is how I learned to use my machine.

    Have fun making things!!

  5. Wow, that is some machine! I love the tagline (from the box): When you’re ready for the best. No wonder your Singer is having some performance anxiety.

  6. You found the feets! Phew! I was worried matty was going to suffer the crabbiness if there were no feets!

Have you thought about checking YouTube for a video? You can find the strangest things there…

  7. Yeesh – that thing is a beast! Good luck learning the ropes!

When I got a new sewing machine, my mom suggested that I sign up for a sewing class at the local sewing machine shop. I made sure they sold my particular sewing machine brand and signed up. It made a world of difference in helping me to understand how to run my fancy machine.

Congrats on your new machine. It is so fun to get something new to experiment with.

  9. Ready, set, SEW!!!

  10. Lucky gal.. have fun with it.

  11. Ooh! I can hardly wait to hear how you like it! It looks intimidating, what with all of those buttons and whatnot.

  12. Yay for Kelli’s mom! I can’t wait to see what creations you’re going to make with it.

    Kelli;
Relax! That machine practically runs itself, which is part of the reason I selected it for you. You are going to LOVE using it. I will help you with lessons, and I’ll be there this summer sometime. In the meantime, just ask me and I can talk you thru it.
P.S. It even embroiders…did you notice? I know you don’t like embroidery today, but you’re gonna use it.
Remember that crazy saying, “I’m gonna use it”?
So glad I made you happy.
    Moms
P.S. I had it serviced, so it’s in perfect shape.

  14. Wow, what a wonderful gift! Enjoy it!

Hooray for your new sewing machine…you will have so much fun trying out all of the stitches! You have a wonderful Mom!!!

  20. Ooooo! Purty! I like your new toy. I have a Older model Huske too (MUCH simpler version) and yet things were so foreign; I had lost my instruction manual and the poor thing sat in my closet for years before I started using it. I had to google how to wind the bobbin and thread the machine–LOL. By the way, you rock, Kelli’s Mom!

  21. Congrats! I’m sure you’ll have it figured out in record time and be sewing up a storm.

  22. that is so so exciting! that is if you can get it to work.

  23. Congrats! Singers make great spares! It’s like the old Girl Scouts song… Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other’s gold. Spares are golden!

Look into JoAnns for the classes. Viking owners get free classes for the life of the machine. I have gone to more than one series of classes on my sewing machine and serger through them!

    Have fun!

  24. ooooh, aaaah! Your mami is so sweet!
    How are you liking it?
    Happy sewing!

  25. So what color pony do you want? KIDDING! Awesome machine, I’m jealous!

  26. Congratulations! It’s BEAUTIFUL!!! Sew on!

  27. Megan June 5, 2009

Eeeeee!!!! Look at all of those OPTIONS! Oh, man. Serious jealousy up here in Minneapolis. Your mom ROCKS!

  28. My wife’s primary machine would appear to be the same machine, and it is a high quality workhorse. Don’t forget to get it tuned up from time to time.
