From the Vandercamp Kitchen, With Love

November 8th

I got most of my baking and sewing done last night before frisbee. We lost, but we had lots of fun. I am truly enjoying this team, even though I haven’t been this bad at something since I played the viola in my elementary school’s orchestra. The sole difference being, I actually want to play frisbee.

I had a conversation with some girlfriends the other day about which Desperate Housewife we would be if we were on the show. Silly? Yes. Fun? Absolutely. But their resounding answer that I would be Bree Vandercamp and not the sex pot Gabriella made me a bit sad. Just because I own more cardigans and pearls than all of my girlfriends put together doesn’t necessarily make me Bree. Although I suppose my Type A housekeeping and tendency to send a thank you note for even the smallest favor does make me a wee bit Vandercampish. Regardless, I’m working on my inner Gabriella. Just after I pull these cookies from the oven…

Two easy recipes for those interested:

oatmeal raisin cranberry cookies

Oatmeal Raisin Cranberry Cookies

Ingredients:
1 package of store-bought oatmeal cookie mix (or your favorite old school oatmeal cookie recipe)
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup cranberries (I like the orange-flavored Craisins)
1 egg
dash of canola oil
dash of water

Directions:
Mix all ingredients together. Bake at 350 for 10 minutes. Let cool on cookie sheets for 10 minutes before transferring to either wire rack or the lazy option — a plate and then your mouth. Makes 2 dozen.

lemontime cookies

Lemontime Cookies

Ingredients:
1 package of store-bought sugar cookie mix (or your favorite old school sugar cookie recipe)
1 package of sugar-free instant lemon pudding
1 egg
1 small lemon, zested and then squeezed for its juice
Dash of canola oil
Dash of water

Directions:
Mix all ingredients. Bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes and also let cool on cookie sheet. Be sure to add the egg, or your cookies will fall flat like these babies. Usually, the pudding and egg make them fluffy and cake-like. Regardless, they were enjoyed.

See? Bree would never use a cookie mix! Although, I’d guess Gabriella would have asked her maid to run down to the bakery…. I may not be winning this argument.

  1. i am definitely trying both of these! they look delightfully delicious! mmm! thanks!!

  2. Oh those cookies make me hungry……

My girlfriends & I try to do the Sex & the City girls comparison and I always end up more like Charlotte than Carrie which is okay – I just wish I had Charlotte’s bank account! πŸ™‚

  3. Oatmeal Raisin are my favorite, I can’t wait to try them with cranberrys!

  4. I just bought Craisins for the first time last week (when making the cranberry biscuits which turned out yucky…thankfully i was wise enough to test run BEFORE debuting them on Thanksgiving!) I’ll have to try the oatmeal recipe. Mom kept saying “I just always thought those were raisins…cool!” πŸ™‚

  5. Ha, ha, ha… too cute! I personally think Bree is a much more interesting character, anyway. Those cookies look sooooo yummy!!

  6. I am a Bree too. Even my mom in the wilds of Africa caught just one episode of Desperate Housewives and told me I was Bree. And when we went to London for four days with an hour by hour itinerary the husband just shook his head …

I wonder what Bree’s blog would be like …

  7. Both kinds of cookies look delicious! Those oatmeal craisin are expecially calling my name.

I think the “DH” conversation is an interesting one – I suspect that I am the most like Lynette – even though I no longer work outside the home.
I get crazy frazzled like that, going in too many directions at once, biting off more than I can chew. I live in a house full of boys (yes, I know, she’s got Penny, but when was the last time we saw that baby???), and I can be abrupt and mean like she is sometimes. Not out of any innate sense of meanness, but just because of heedlessly not thinking before I speak. However, like Lynette, I think that I am fiercely loyal, and would do absolutely anything to go to the bat for the friends/family that I love. And I am a very hard worker.

Oh – and I’ve got Susan’s klutziness. In spades. (I can only wish I had some of Gabrielle’s looks and confidence, and Bree’s gracious hostessness!)

  8. The Desperate Housewives conversation is too funny. My girlfriends and I had a similar conversation in college about cars. On of my friends helpfully volunteered that if I were a car I’d be a Grand Wagoneer. This is when I was 19 years old. Crikey. That still stings…

  9. Those pictures are making me drool!

  10. wow! that lemon cookie recipe sounds devine.

will def. have to try it.

    great blog πŸ™‚

  11. Girl, these look goooood. I have to go “old school” cuz there just ain’t any boxes of oatmeal cookie mix in my grocery stores. Cranberries don’t exist in Italy but there’s one world market here where I can find a can of Ocean Spray cranberry sauce. But I don’t think that would be a good substitute, vero? Note to pen pal: send crasins in next care package. πŸ˜‰

  12. the cookies are looking good.

i think i would be lynette. i think it’s all the boys and one little girl ?!?!? (she had me totally cracking up 2 wks ago when she kicked nora’s door down. i could see me doing that … or not)

  13. heee, very cute.
And those cookies are now on my baking list for the this week. Thanks for the recipes!

  14. i don’t watch the show, so i have no clue as to each character’s personality. but, wonder if there’s a quiz you can take to find out for sure? i’m crazy with thos “what kind of llama are you?” quizzes. btw, i made that one up.

  15. Along with everyone else….you put me to shame with your energy! Both of those recipes are going on my list! I love Craisins – they are delicious in scones too! I wish I were more like Bree. I’m always trying to do a million things, but only some get done! Maybe you have a 40 hour day down in AZ? πŸ˜‰

  16. Well, I’m with Katy here. Reading your daily journal I often thought about your strenght! How can you manage to do all the things you usually do? You cook, sewn, swim, run, work, play with your fresbee team, go out for bike rides, ect. ect. Are you bionic maybe????

  17. I gained 10 pounds just looking at your yummy photo’s!

  18. Those cookies look delish!! Gimme some!! πŸ™‚

  19. Thanks for this post. It made me slow down and bake something. I’ll put the Lemon cookies on my list.
