Heroine

A True Heroine

I’ve had amazing women guide my life, and my grandmother is at the top of the list. She’s a heroine for a dozen reasons, but this week namely for taking such good care of these characters:

And the old men sleep...

Pap sleeps

My great-uncle John and grandfather, respectively.ย  We came home from a fabulous errand to Native Seeds to find them “rooting” for the Wildcats. Probably not a bad idea they fell asleep — the Devils ate the Wildcats for lunch.

Grandma Max & Pap

My grandparents have always been some of my biggest supporters. They arranged my study-abroad in high school. They’ve attended my graduations and my grandmother is one heck of a pen-pal. You wouldn’t believe how many letters she sent me in Cameroon. They want the best for me and while we don’t always agree on what that looks like, I know fundamentally they want my happiness.

Plus, how sweet is my grannie? I just want to pinch her cheeks in this photo! Love that woman more than I can express.

  1. Hi Kelli! Looks like you had a wonderful time with your grandparents. Enjoy them while you can! I lost my grandma in November, and I still think a lot about how much she would like something, or wish that I had spent more time with her.

I’m sure you don’t need the reminder, but just in case. ๐Ÿ™‚

By the way, I’m switching over to my new email address, which I used here. Cheers!

  2. What a cutie-patootie. I miss my firecracker Grandma more than I can say. So glad you get to spend time together!

ps. I think you look a little like your grandmother…

  3. Hi Kelli,

Your grandmother looks so sweet !!
It is so nice to have such inspiring and loving family around you.
My granny was a pretty special one too. She passed away a few years ago, but she left me with more than a few good lessons about enjoying life and looking for the silver lining !

    Enjoy, enjoy !

  8. I love Great Uncle John. That photo had me giggling too.

Your Grandma sounds like a gem. You’re lucky to have each other.

  9. Are you sure these two are your grandparents? They seems too young to me………and I really like your grannie necklace! How great you had the chance to spend some quality time with them.

  10. I visit your blog occasionally because after 4 years since my last stay in Africa, I still havent recovered from the yearning and nostalgia the rest of the world calls Mal d’Afrique. It happens to me every time. I have been to africa several times, and over the years, the magnet’s force has not diminished. I find myself constantly and sometimes inadvertantly attracted to all things sub-Saharian, often musing at my African sky screen saver, contemplating ways to return.

Today, reading your grandparents post, I smiled thinking how lucky we are to have grandparents. Mine passed away early in my childhood, but were an essential part of my growing up. Now I can enjoy it all over again, watching my 3 yr-old son pampered and spoiled by my parents, his loving and snoozing grandparents. Lovely blog, I’ll be returning soon. Ciao

  11. You are very blessed to have your grandparents still around. I miss mine all the time. My grandmother was definitely a soft place to land in the hard times of growing up. She was the happy memory of my childhood.

Can you imagine, someday we will be someone’s grandmother?

  12. Great tribute to Grandma!

    Looks like a nice visit.

  13. Awww what sweet photos. Your grandparents look like very sweet people indeed. Lucky girl! ๐Ÿ˜‰

A classy lady in many ways! How fortunate you are to have one another.

I think I had a dream about prickly pears last night.

  15. What a beauty she is! You are very fortunate to have your grandparents.

  16. Looks like they were “resting their eyes” for a minute lol. I miss my Grandma’s so much! You look a lot like your Grandma.

  17. Your grandmother is just lovely. She looks like a (benevolent) force to be reckoned with. ๐Ÿ™‚

  18. I hope all goes well for your grandfather and I’m glad you’re able to help out your grandmother who looks like the sweetest person on earth.

  19. Your grandparents sound like wonderful people and yes she is just as cute as can be! I think you two look alike. Loved the pictures of your great-uncle and grandpa. It reminded me of my brother Ron who falls asleep anywhere. Enjoy your family while you have them. They are such a blessings surrounding us. I miss mine and my parents very much, yet I still feel them surrounding me. They left with with so much. Now I am a grandmother. Funny because you still feel 21 inside but now you are the older ones in the family now. Grandmother is as blessed a thing to be as being a mother is. The best to your grandpa. I hope all is all right with him. Hugs to you.

  20. Your great uncle and gramps are so adorable! And your grandmother…I sure do hope I look that great when I’m her age. Enjoy her while you can. I lost grandmother a couple of weeks ago. She taught me how to curse in French and have a really great shaving cream fight. She was also and awesome crocheter.

  21. What a wonderful post about your grandparents! Grandparents can indeed be such cheerleaders! I just lost my grandma (last of the g-parents) 2 weeks ago & am treasuring all the memories we had. ๐Ÿ™‚
