Just Call Me Grace

January 28th

The weather forecast in Phoenix today is like something out of Mary Poppins — practically perfect in every way. I decided to seize the opportunity and went for a 2-hour ride through the giant suburban stucco cul-de-sac, also known as Ahwatukee. Sufjan Stevens and Jay Z alternated on my iPod — pushing me with contrasting styles, the sun was keeping me warm but not hot, my legs felt strong and I was really enjoying the ride. Before I knew it, I was 20 miles or so from home without much other than a good attitude and water bottle. By the time I made my way back, I was beyond hungry, rather shaky and desperate for a warm shower.
I trekked over to Rubio’s — one of my favorite weekend haunts — for a fish burrito and some much needed ice tea, but before I could sit down to eat, I managed to spill two ambitiously full containers of green salsa on my table, book, wallet and keys. Just as I finished cleaning up the mess and laughing at myself, I shook my Nalgene full of ice tea a bit too much and the ice came clattering down, sending freezing cold refreshment down my shirt and pants. Nice.
A family sitting a few tables away didn’t bother to stifle their laughter. Their kids had laughed after my jalapeno jolting salsa mess. Now dripping in ice tea, I’m pretty sure their parents wondered if I was on drugs or just possibly the least coordinated human being they’d ever seen.
As my friend Homer J. Simpson would say, “I’m so smart. S-M-R-T.”

  1. LOL! Sounds like a perfect end to a great day. πŸ™‚

  2. You are exhausting! I would have been miss clumsy walking to the coffee shop. I certainly couldn’t manage even just standing up after a 40 mile bike ride.

  3. Maybe your hands were trembling for a too much long ride???? Babe, you’re aging, be aware of this and don’t ask to much to your poor bionic body…
    I’m kidding…..well…..ok, I shut up!

  4. Are you sure you weren’t overtired after that cycle? I get very clumsy when I’ve overdone it at the gym!

  5. Look at it this way, at least you have ICE cubes to spill and ICE tea to drink!!!!! πŸ™‚ I am getting homesick for certain foods….. πŸ™‚

  6. oh girl! i can so sympathize as i’m the most clumsy person! πŸ™‚ have a great week.

  7. I feel ya! When I workout too hard my body gets shaky as well. I have to make sure to calm down before I do anything. Enjoy that great weather! It’s 65 degrees here and I am freezing. I’m totally bundled up. Some guy called me little red riding hood because I had the hood on from my sweatshirt!

  8. What a day!

  9. It’s 10 degrees with the windchill today. I’m not going outside to do ANYTHING! Enjoy the weather and keep up the good work!

  10. Atleast you had a long bike-ride as a plausible reason for the continuous spillage.

I’ve made giant messes at Baja Fresh without any prior exertion whatsoever. But I blame the salsa, because it definitely wasn’t my fault.

  11. Oy. I would be annoyed.

BTW – I finished my document duvet this weekend and it is REALLY cute. I like it a lot. BUT I lost my camera, so I can’t post it. But just know it is brown and pink and really really cool.

  12. I am so jealous about your weather! It’s snowing and 23 degrees here, blech!

  13. I my…I am a total klutz too! πŸ˜‰

  14. I’m still scraping my jaw off the ground at the casual way you manage to say “Oh yeah – I just ran 20 miles…” (and I’m assuming that you then had to cover the 20 back???)

Ay yi yi – I am beyond impressed… I’m that klutzy and accident-prone every single day, without doing anything that even approaches that level of physical exertion…
