My Melody Was My Favorite

September 25th

wrapped gifts

Heidi sent a message a few months ago — would anyone be interested in a “back to school swap?” With fall right around the corner, did anyone else feel the desire for new paper, pens and a school bag? Yes. Not surprisingly, yes. Not only have I always had “a thing for bags” as my mama says, but also love correspondence. I am constantly writing and sending letters, and keep a journal. (You know, where I talk about all the non-Cleaver stuff inappropriate for the Internets.)
When I was young, you couldn’t buy Hello Kitty stationery in Arizona. But there was one shop at a mall in California I found when visiting on vacation. An entire store! Pencils, paper, cute little Japanese characters that made me want to sit down and write a pen pal letter to every girl I’d ever met at camp, in part just to show off my pretty paper. And then seal them with monkichi stickers!
I spent the next few years saving all my babysitting and car washing money to go hog wild in that store each summer vacation. And so yes, I’ve always been a dork — but a dork with sparkly pencils.

Imagine my delight when I received this swap from Marian. Not only did she use African fabric for the bag, but she also made a clutch and a moleskin cover. She spoiled me rotten! I simply love her creativity and attention to detail.

Thank you Heidi for organizing and thank you Marian for your generosity!

  1. What a fun swap! I, too, love all things paper and pens. What a great bag, it is so you!

  2. I love paper, too – and all school supplies. TH laughs at how I get excited over pens with sticky tabs in them, and post-its shaped like animals, etc. Plus I was a huge Hello Kitty fan back in the day…What lovely items you received! I like the elephants the best.

  3. What a fun swap! I love all the ideas and creative ways to package them. Almost makes me wish I was back in school.

The personalized items for you are so wonderful and thoughtful of your swap partner. I’ve been thinking about that clutch pattern as it looks like the one from Bend the Rules Sewing–I am inspired to try making one, too.

  4. lovely swap, I love all the pens and paper things too, and a great bag to put them in. I have recently found some UK sites that sell my Melody and Hello Kitty things, it is so hard to get over here, I was pretty excited!!!

  5. I still love Hello Kitty paper. There is a Sanrio store right in Chandler near Lee Lee’s! I will not admit to how many times I’ve there.

Did I mention my HK bento box collection?

    I clearly have issues.

  6. You are soooo lucky…. ha! Almost as lucky as i am!

  7. What a great swap!
I am a big sucker for a nifty notebook or a cool pen.
And I still like Hello Kitty! ; )

  8. Sweet haul!

Hey, it wasn’t Eastridge Mall, was it? I *loved* the Sanrio store there! Far longer than was fitting, probably; so much fun. I was a Little Twin Stars girl myself, though. 😉

  9. I love school supplies! That will be a perk for me whenever I have kids. They’ll think I’m crazy though when I want to open and sniff everything with them. lol. Fall is my favorite season. Everything about it!

  10. oh what great little things.

  11. I remember shedding quite a few tears over my clear vinyl Hello Kitty swim bag ripped! Now, I still think she is just the cutest of all the many characters out there.

Your swap goodies were so perfectly you!

  12. I think the frog (Keroppi?) was my favorite, but my favorite changed over the years. I also loved Spottie Dottie and the Little Twin Stars. Hehe. I still go into the Hello Kitty store in the mall sometimes and I’m always reeeaaally embarassed, because there’s only tiny little girls in there haha!

Great swap package by the way! She went all out, it’s beautiful stuff.

  13. I love the covered book she made for you- it looks like a really special package.

  14. Man, I used to LOVE shopping for school supplies. I am a grown up dork too.

And that swap booty is nice… Rowan yarn? Fancy!!

  15. What great items you received! I’m still an HK fan…and it’s really hard to find in France.

  16. I love the elephants! So cute.
I too was a huge fan of the Sanrio store. I was lucky enough to live very near a mall with one in it, possible the one you went to, lol. I still love those places, especially the pencils. I had a tendency to never use mine. I was the same way with stickers. I didn’t want to use them up, so there they sat. I am totally a dork too. Let’s start a dork club. Hmmm, I think I will.

  17. Going back to school always makes me happy… 😉
These picts are truly eye candy…
Always fun to have new things when we go back to school and it makes it even better when they are handmade goodies!
You truly deserve to be spoilt Kelli!
