Shout Out

October 6th

If I were a pop star accepting an MTV music award today, my speech might go something like this:

1. A shout out to the US Postal Service. I hear from friends in other countries who fret about lost mail, paying ridiculous custom fees and simply hoping the postal person doesn’t help themselves to a piece of their packages. Thank you US Postal Service. For $.39, I can send a letter to Alaska and that is just awesome. Plus, you guys generally don’t steal and that is doubly awesome.

2. While I’m on the community services list, the Tempe Library rocks. You have a growing DVD collection and books I can reserve online. Plus, you are free and I don’t have to spend $25 to get my “free” shipping. Instead, I walk less than a mile and viola — books and movies waiting for me at the hold desk. Who needs NetFlix and Amazon when you have this resource 5 minutes away?

3. 8th Continent soy milk. I’m new to the soy game and frankly loving it. Fewer calories, sweeter taste and less environmental impact. I’ve also recently added Morningstar Farms products to my diet and I’m thinking I may be vegetarian before I know it. While I still crave a burger once a month or so, I could go without.

4. NPR podcasts. I bought a new car last week that has one of those spiffy Ipod ports. I can now listen to Michael Feldman any darn time I want. What’s the name of that show? Wait, wait, don’t tell me…

5. And a last simple joy of the day — rainy mornings. I ran through a lightning storm this morning that was scarily beautiful. As bright bolts cracked down on nearby mountains, I watched a giant orange moon fall beneath the horizon and the morning sky turn from inky black to indigo blue. A shout out to Mother Nature, fo shizzle.

  1. Speaking of MorningStar stuff…Trader Joes has a great selection…the veggie patties (mock sausage patties) rock my world. You may also want to try Dr Praegers Veggie Burgers…my hubby who is a meat n taters person REQUESTS these things…they are SOOOO good on a whole wheat hamburger bun with fresh romaine and a thick slice of a beefsteak or Roma tomato. Gotta love eatin’ healthy esp when it tastes SOOOO good! 🙂
    Have a great weekend!!!!

  2. 1.I’ve always been amazed by the postal service. Seeing as 60% of my job is direct mail….we’re “like this,” the USPS and me.

    2. Good for you! I too “order” books online! So easy!

    3. And mmmmm, I love a morningstar farms BLT. The chicken patties are good too. Although that stuff has a ton of sodium in it…(my favorite!)

    4. I love how you just throw out “I got a new car last week” like it’s just another little purchase =)

    5. Lightning = best observed from the safety of a car with rubber tires.

    Have a great weekend!

  3. Neh, Michael Feldman is Whadya Know?

  4. Great list! I need to focus on simple pleasures such as these instead of focusing on the negative. And I’m off to find out where our local library is! (Yes, I’m pathetic…never been…I’ve only lived here for four years though…hee hee)

  5. Mother Nature kicks ass! Tonight we were driving home and the huge moon was just hanging over the prairie. It was surrounded by this sort of foggy haze and it was way cool.

And super yeah! for the library. Books you want without paying an arm and a leg! I have a big stack by my bed that I am going to go and commune with right now!

  6. Oh I wish I had the ipod connector thing in the car. Well I have one but it is some complicated wire thingy that just seems to get lost and mixed up in the car and gear shift. I love your idea of your speech.

  7. You got a new car??????? What, OH WHAT, did you get??? That is so exciting!! I haven’t taken enough advantage of the iPod port in Leeloo, but the times I have, its been extra spiffy. Congrats on your new wheels! Tell me you’ll get another Life is Good sticker – I love that.

  8. Cool list! I take my boys to the library every Saturday morning to pick up our “on hold” books & CD’s…isn’t that the best?!

New car too? What kind? I love major purchases 😉

  9. You sound so happy with life, I’m really glad!!!

I love libaries too, however I did buy a book in borders today…. oohps a slight waste of money I know. The thing is I bought socks in tk maxx 5 minutes before for ¬£2.00 instead of ¬£12.00 so I treated myself to a book.

I’m amazed that some one out there would pay ¬£12.00 for a pair of socks though!

  10. I’m giving a shout-out for that lemon cake from the last post! I made it for a dinner in honor of my dad’s bday and it was great. Having some ladies over next week for coffee and cake and I’ve found the cake I’m making!

  11. Ha! Great post. =)

  12. i used to love morning star products. nice you are in direction of being a vegetarian or semi anyway…balance is good, mindfulness too.

the scary beautiful run must have been amazing…a thrill.

  13. great list!

I love the morningstar farms products. Sometimes when DH wants a burger I have a veggie patty instead — I just can’t eat red meat as often as he can! I love the spicy black bean patties and the tomato-basil ones.

That sounds like a gorgeous run. I’ve had a couple of rainy evening runs the past couple of weeks and they have been my favorite runs yet.
