Hopping into Technology

Hippity Hop to Present Technology

Goodbye Rabbit Ears

So I was wondering how I could get internet in my home. Eventually I looked online and found sites like satellite internet now which really appealed to me. I had been thinking to myself for a really long time that I really ought to jump on this internet band wagon, and had been told it was worth it! However I finally got in contact with an internet man and he talked me into cable and internet at home. It seems like everyone has internet in my area of town so I may as well join the crew! Who knows what we’ll discover… I must say, the internet so far is pretty awesome, as are the cooking channels and my new-found access to Whale Wars.

The golf channel

Internet? On the COUCH?

He did a victory lap after the cable man left, sitting promptly in front of the tv with the golf station whispering away. It was almost like my home was protesting the change. The poor cable man had to drill nearly a dozen holes in a variety of external in internal walls before he could finally get things straight. The price is minimal when split, but I’m truly hoping this doesn’t change my way of life. More reading, less tv is going to be significantly harder now that Paula Dean is in my living room. I know I’m going to end up watching more television, it’s pretty inevitable. One of my friends even sent me the latest cable tv data statistics 2020 report that showed us that the majority of American households have television sets. The statistics even showed us that people spend a lot of time watching their cable tv every day. Hopefully, that won’t happen to us! I’m hoping to just watch the television for a short amount of time every day.

Who knows? With this new entertainment and the ability to immediately post photos, I was submerged in creativity, completing a handful of projects:

And a new bag with bamboo handles. Last week, when having lunch at a nice restaurant downtown meeting new donors*, I saw a woman come in with a simple floral bag with bamboo handles. The bag looked so nice and classic. I knew I could recreate it; $6 and one hour later, I have a thank you gift for the weekend’s fundraising caterer. I’m looking forward to purchasing more bamboo to make a series of summer bags in this fashion.

*During this meeting (with a Senator and his lovely wife, no less) I managed, in a move only I could muster, to step just right when leaving the restroom and catch my sandal. It snapped, leaving me with one shoe 2 minutes before the lunch started. Nothing says, “Welcome Senator! Now, please consider giving us money!” like the blushing, barefoot girl. Help me Rhonda, I hope they were looking at my smile and not at my sole.

Film Rouge

Movie night is something special at my house because I don’t venture into the rental world very often. Dim the lights, make a big batch of healthy kettle corn (popcorn*+ Splenda + cinnamon + dash of cayenne), grab some sodas and a pack of Red Vines to use as straws and cuddle up for a great flick. Valentine’s day is a great excuse to make the extra effort, especially considering this movie night might set you back $5 but certainly shows thought. (Which as you know, goes much farther than bling to earn bonus points in my book).

As far as Valentine’s day movies go, my all-time favorite would have to be Pretty Woman. There is just something so interesting to me about the story of an escort who manages to find love with a wealthy client. Plus, one of my friends who lives in Rome currently works as an escort and we always send each other quotes from the movie! She has such an intriguing life, no two days are ever the same when you are a sex worker! She’s even told me about how some of the guys discuss their fantasies about having sex while watching something scary in the background. They usually give the escort the new Netflix horror movies list and ask them to pick one they don’t mind. People have such bizarre fantasies at times, that I can’t even fathom it.

Apparently, in recent years adult entertainers have even started to embrace the internet. My friend told me that along with websites like https://www.escortdirectory.com/escorts-rome-127/ she also manages to meet clients using adult social media platforms like OnlyFans. I am not sure if sex work would be right for me but I certainly applaud my friend for making a living the way she does. Sometimes she even earns more than I do!

Anyway, if you are looking for some fun Valentine’s movie picks, here are my recommendations.

Great Valentine’s Movies:

Love Actually

The African Queen

Roman Holiday

Amelie

Like Water for Chocolate

And to add the obvious pun: Lights! Camera! Action!

* I don’t mind popcorn in a movie setting — my greatest pet peeve– when my own crunching cancels out the annoying crunching of others.

Stop What You Are Doing & Go Get This Book

Okay, Finny is a book genie. She typically sends me an awesome book for our Christmakkah celebration and this year’s was another gem: “The Ridiculous Race.” {A previous selection was “Winterdance,” — pretty much the only book my brother, dad and I can agree is absolutely try-not-to-pee funny.}

I didn’t just read this book. I inhaled it. I couldn’t put it down. I sat in my car for the two extra minutes I had before church started to read a few more pages. I stayed up late three nights in a row because I was hooked on TRR. It is a comedic take on two best friends who decide to travel around the world, going opposite directions, without using airplanes. It helps that the writers, Steve Hely and Vali Chandrasekaran, are real-life comedy writers for televison. It also helps that they had no idea what they were getting themselves into. I also think I fell so head over heels for this read because I’ve been to a couple of the places they travel to and can relate with many of their dizzying cultural experiences.

This book is so funny and is a breath of fresh air from pretty much everything else I’ve been reading lately. So, if you need a good read? Pick it up. Five out of five bananas, absoloodle. And apparently they have a fan club too. Consider me a member, guys.

Mixed Media

Books:

I gave up sometime during 2008 in blogging about the books I was reading. I’m not sure why, but I’m back on the media blogging motivation train. I just finished “Ask Now the Beasts” which came as a gift from a fellow blogger. It is a moving and eloquent collection of essays about animals written by Ruth Rudner. Rudner writes about her pets (dogs, cats, horses) and of the animals she admires in the wild (coyotes, wolves, penguins) and at the zoo (gorillas). Her stories are insightful and a true delight to read.

“There are many of us, reared by humans and lavished with love, who dream of release into the wild, free to spend a lifetime wantering in mountains and forests, confident (to a certain extent) we could survive. But we are not gorillas. What can it be to bet the center of lavished attention, a pampered child, and then find yourself in so radically a different world? To be released into the wild, a captive animal has to be trained to survive in the wild. To be released into a zoo is different, The threats are different. The expectations are different. The knowledge of life is different.”

I’m now enjoying “The Ridiculous Race,” a book Finny gave me for Christmas. I am also re-reading “The Red Tent,” one of my favorites from years past with Katie. I started to read, “The Five Love Languages,” after having it recommended by a bunch of friends, but it doesn’t make sense to read this when you aren’t in a relationship. So, it’s sitting on the bookshelf for a bit.

Music:

I am currently absolutely in love with Bon Iver, Sasha Fierce and Kings of Leon. Take that for a diverse taste in music!

Movies:

No surprise, I was taken by Brad Pitt in “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. It ranks right up there with “Slumdog Millionare” for best picture. Love! Great movies. I also saw “7 Pounds” and it broke my heart. Beautiful movie, but bring lots of tissues.

What are you reading/watching/listening to?
