We Be Jammin’!

I truly love living in the desert. Yes, the weather is brutal this time of year, but if you stop to smell the cacti, you’ll be amazed by the colors and adaptations living things must make this time of year to survive. Everything has an attitude in this heat. It seems while the rest of us are running from our air-conditioned houses to our air-conditioned cars to drive to our air-conditioned offices, all while sipping the largest, coldest drink possible, the cacti surrounding the city are looking at the sun and saying, “What? Is that all you’ve got? I’m just warming up down here. Bring it.”

You think I’ll shrink in this heat? No way! I’m going to turn a beautiful shade of purple instead. Take that, burning star in the sky.

I don’t need no stinkin’ water. My friend Agave has been slipping me some wicked tequila anyway. All’s well in Barrel Cacti land.

In the meantime, I’ve been inspired by these savvy succulents.

What to do when it is 110 outside?

And call me crazy, but I’m harvesting prickly pear fruit this weekend and taking a stab (and more than likely a poke or two) at making jam. From cactus. And maybe a pie! Yes, I very well may have a case of heat-induced crafting craziness. Yes, indeed.

  1. What?? That is too cool! I had no idea that you could make jam from cactus. Those colors are just plain amazing, and the cards are cute too. Did you make that stamp?

    I think we could be growing cacti here in N. Minnesota with all the heat & dry we’ve been having. Not 114 but STILL. 100 for DULUTH and no rain is hot hot hot.

  4. Cactus jam? That would be completely awesome. And in my mind, redeem the desert a little bit. Can’t wait to see how it comes out.

  5. Cactus jam? Cactus pie? Awesome idea. How about cactus rhubarb pie? Or cactus jalapeno jam? Tasty? Gross? Bueller?

    I, too, am a fan of cactus appreciation. Funny creatures, they are. A mystery. Kind of like Jawas, but not.

  6. Love the cards. I once did a cacti freeze for the afterschool club wall. I took green foot prints off the children and we cut them out and stuck them on the wall to create cacti. They then sewed pink felt flowers for on the cacti. It was really good so I thought with black birds in the distance, and loats of yellow and orange shapes for the landscape. I was on the commitee and was in to help. The play leader thought it was a bit too abstract!!!!! How dare she!!!!

  7. I suggest making a prikley pear JALAPENO jam. Sounds weird but it’s sooooo good. I’ve made it once. It made my kitchen STINK, but it was worth it.

Me encanta la tuna! that’s the name here… TUNA, and is so yummy… pero tengo resistencia a la insulina y parece que es muy dulce, asi que no est√° dentro de mis frutas permitidas, justo las que no puedo comer me gustan tanto: pi√±a, mango, tuna… me queda la sand√≠a, el mel√≥n y unos ricos kiwis.

    Acá no se da mucho la tuna rosada, en el norte de Chile si, en Santiago se come la verde. Yo en Bolivia comí de pulpa rosada y tambien como color naranja.
